Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation at WCRMC is a comprehensive program for people who either are at risk for heart disease or who have recently experienced cardiac or vascular injury.  Our team uses specific exercises and education to help patients make lifestyle changes, adjust to limitations, and live a full life.

Key Points

We meet with the patient and family to provide education about cardiovascular disease, why it is important to consistently address it, and how to adjust their lifestyle choices to improve their short-term and long-term health.

Medicare and most insurance companies cover 36 sessions with one of the following diagnoses and a physician’s order:

  • Heart attack in the last 12 months
  • Open heart surgery
  • Coronary stenting or coronary angioplasty
  • Stable chest pain
  • Heart valve replacement or repair
  • Heart or a heart/lung transplant
  • Stable chronic heart failure with an ejection fraction less than 35 percent

Other conditions may be covered as well.  If you have a heart-related medical issue, feel free to call us! We will be happy to talk with you or your provider. We also work with people who do not qualify for insurance but who want to pay us direct; a physician referral is still required.

Your Cardiac Rehab Visit

  • In our Cardiac Rehab program, patients follow a planned and monitored exercise program three days a week.
  • Blood pressure, heart rate and heart rhythm are all monitored using a wireless EKG while exercising. The overall goal is to strengthen cardiac function, but many times patients find their muscle strength, flexibility and balance improve as well.
  • By the end of the program, patients typically reach a level where they are comfortable carrying on activities of daily living and exercising on their own. Each patient’s progress is documented and sent to their physician over the duration of the program.
